Mr.Fred Natural, the 1960's guru said to be, "th' only knower of th' cosmic mysteries alive at this time.", is arguably one of R. Crumb's most lovable and enduring characters. "Natch" as he is known to his friends made his first appearance in the 1967 premiere issue of the underground comic book, Yarrowstalk. And ever since he has continued to dazzle and confuse with his insightful advice and cynical witticisms, like... "When you arise in the morning, you should do last night's dirty dishes . . . then you should sing a simple melody (of your own choice) . . . then you should call somebody up (not me) . . . then go to the store . . . buy some asparagus."

On Sale T-Shirt of the Week: The East Village Other

The East Village Other (EVO) was one of the first American counter cultural newspapers, following the Los Angeles Free Press which had begun just a few months earlier. Started in New York City in 1965 the original founders where Walter Bowart, Ishmael Reed, Allen Katzman, Dan Rattiner, John Wilcock and Sherry Needham.

EVO was an important outlet for the underground comix movement as well, publishing comic strips from some of the emerging cartoonist prior to the San Francisco launching of Zap Comix in 1968. Some of the artist who's work was featured included Trina Robbins, Kim Deitch, Art Spiegelman, Spain Rodriguez, Robert Crumb, Jay Lynch and many others.

In 1969 EVO began publishing Gothic Blimp Works, an all comics tabloid with some color printing, billed as "the first Sunday underground comic paper."

That same year EVO editor Jaakov Kohn covered Woodstock and wrote while attending the event: "We are home and at peace with each other and ourselves. I think you will find we have changed and grown. I don't want to leave, but I guess we must. The only thing is, how can I come back and do the old things? This is how we should live. Can we? -----Peace-John" The newspaper closed it's doors in 1972.

Keep on Truckin' Mama, Truckin' my Blues Away....

"Truckin' My Blues Away" a song popularized by early blues pioneer, Blind Boy Fuller, is said to have inspired R. Crumb, to create the one page comic strip "Keep On Truckin" which went on to became a moniker for a generation. This strip appeared in Zap Comix No. 1 in 1967. Robert Crumb later immortalized Blind Boy Fuller in the Yazoo Records "Heroes of the Blues" trading card collection.
